High-power diesel generator sets are deployed for the offshore construction of Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge, firmly underpinning the bottom line of power supply safety.

As a flagship cross-sea project in Fujian Province, the Xiamen section of the Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge faces extreme challenges during offshore construction, including rough sea conditions, frequent typhoons and the lack of onshore municipal power supply in remote marine areas. To guarantee 24/7 uninterrupted power for the 50,000-square-meter offshore construction platform, the main pylons and anchorages of the Liuwudian Navigation Bridge, large hoisting equipment and round-the-clock nighttime operations, the project has deployed multiple high-power diesel generator sets, forming a three-level power supply system of main power supply + standby power supply + emergency power supply.

Tailored to the characteristics of fully offshore construction in open waters, diesel generator sets serve three core functions: critical standby power, emergency power guarantee, and off-grid self-power supply. They achieve millisecond-level power switching in case of municipal power failure, ensuring continuous operation of concrete mixing plants, hoisting machinery and intelligent monitoring systems. During typhoon seasons with cable disconnection risks, the units operate independently to power lighting, drainage, fire protection and emergency communication systems. Combined with the smart power station system, automatic load distribution, remote monitoring and fault early warning are realized. Compared with traditional single-unit power supply solutions, the system reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 30% respectively, balancing operational safety and eco-friendly construction.

According to the project person in charge, "Diesel generator sets act as the lifeline of offshore construction. They deliver all-weather, highly reliable power for this offshore steel fortress, ensuring the on-time completion of key construction milestones such as main pylon capping and steel box girder hoisting."

The Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge is not merely a transportation project, but also a bonding bridge for cross-strait integrated development. Reserved with interfaces for permanent emergency diesel generators at the design stage, the bridge will allow the rapid deployment of high-power generating units after full completion. These units will provide 24/7 uninterrupted standby power for the bridge’s lighting, monitoring, toll collection, ventilation, fire protection and emergency communication systems, ensuring normal traffic operation during extreme weather conditions or municipal power outages.

At present, Jinmen still relies heavily on diesel generators for power supply, which features high costs and poor stability. With the advancement of the "Four Connectivities" — water, electricity, gas and transportation links, the power support system of the Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge will be interconnected with the mainland power grid. In the future, stable and affordable electricity can be delivered to Jinmen, gradually replacing the outdated diesel generators on the island. This will cut residential power costs, end Jinmen’s history of isolated power supply, and accelerate the realization of an integrated Xiamen-Jinmen living circle.

In the construction of the Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge, the project team adheres to the philosophy of green construction and intelligent empowerment. It innovatively adopts an integrated power supply solution combining high-efficiency diesel generator sets and smart energy storage power stations, replacing the traditional single-unit mode with high energy consumption and high emissions.

The high-power diesel generators deployed at the construction site meet China National Stage III / Stage IV emission standards, featuring low fuel consumption, low noise and low emissions. Cooperating with the intelligent load management system, the output power is dynamically adjusted according to the start and stop of equipment, avoiding the problem of "overcapacity for low load". The supporting energy storage system seamlessly takes over the power load during generator maintenance or malfunctions to achieve zero power outage. It stores energy during off-peak hours and releases power during peak hours, further reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Measured data shows that compared with the traditional power supply mode, this solution cuts fuel consumption by approximately 30% per hour and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 30%. Meanwhile, it prevents diesel leakage, electromagnetic radiation and noise pollution, effectively protecting the marine ecology of the Xiamen-Jinmen Strait. It sets a Xiamen model for green construction of large cross-sea super projects.

Multiple high-power diesel generators have been deployed on the offshore construction platform of the Xiamen-Jinmen Bridge, establishing a three-level power supply system of main supply + standby + emergency. It ensures uninterrupted power for the 50,000 ㎡ platform, main pylon construction, large-scale equipment and round-the-clock night operations.

Adopting China Stage IV emission standard units together with smart power stations, the system achieves a 30% reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions, balancing operational safety and environmental protection. Permanent emergency generator interfaces are reserved on the bridge to secure power for future Xiamen-Jinmen integrated traffic, facilitating the implementation of the cross-strait "Four Connectivities".
